Thomas Shikaan

Reverend Thomas Orsaar Shikaan, born 30th January, 1965 (59 years) is the senior pastor of Spirit Life Christian Assembly. He is married to Dr. Mrs Victoria Shikaan and together they have four children, Sater Nder, Stephen Shikaan, Alpha Shikaan and David Shikaan. He has played a pivotal role in founding multiple schools and churches across Benue State. He also took on the responsibility of chairmanship at the Benue State Christians Pilgrims Welfare Board. Over the past ten years, he has been deeply engaged in coordinating the Conference of Tiv Gospel Ministers (COTGOM). Throughout his endeavors, Reverend Thomas Shikaan has consistently upheld a steadfast commitment to preaching moral righteousness and maintaining a commendable quality of life.

Early Life and background

Reverend Thomas Orsaar Shikaan was born into the family of Mr. Shikaan Daka and Mrs. Shamangi Shikaan Daka. His roots trace back to Mbayion in the Gboko Local Government of Benue State. His educational journey began at St. Mark’s Anglican Primary School in Gboko, where he was enrolled from 1972 to 1978. He later pursued his studies at Government College, Makurdi, from 1979 to 1984. Between 1984 and 1985, he attended the School of Basic Studies in Zaria, followed by a dedicated focus on Zoology within the Department of Biological Sciences at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, from 1985 to 1988. His scholarly pursuits culminated in a Master’s Degree from the same university in 1992.

Subsequently, he embarked on an academic career as a graduate assistant at Ahmadu Bello University. During this period, Reverend Thomas Shikaan relocated to Makurdi alongside his family. In this new chapter, he took the initiative to establish Shepherd Heritage Academy, a nursery and primary school, as well as New Covenant Christian College International, among other educational institutions and places of worship. At the heart of his leadership, he stands as the visionary founder and senior pastor of Spirit Life Christian Assembly.

Marriage and Family Life

During his time as a student, Reverend Thomas encountered his future wife, Dr. Victoria Shikaan, who is also a Reverend. Their story of connection began during a holiday visit when he spotted her at his uncle’s residence and found himself captivated by her presence. This marked the inception of their courtship journey, a process that commenced in the year 1986. At that juncture, Thomas Shikaan was a first-year university student, and he candidly acknowledges that he wasn’t particularly devout in his Christian beliefs. Nevertheless, as their relationship evolved, an interesting transformation occurred – both individuals found themselves experiencing a deepening of their faith. Despite his early uncertainties, Thomas Shikaan became increasingly certain that he had encountered his life partner. Seeking divine confirmation, he periodically sought God’s guidance until the moment when his conviction was affirmed. Their union culminated in a joyous wedding ceremony in December 1987, and their marital bond has remained unbreakable ever since. Throughout the years, their union has been graced with the blessing of four children:

Career

Reverend Thomas Shikaan’s journey led him to serve as a graduate assistant at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, a position he believes was guided by divine intervention. He recounts a moment when he felt God’s calling, assuring him that he would return to the very university from which he graduated. Though this message seemed unusual, he accepted it with gratitude and embarked on his youth service after completing his studies. Upon returning to his hometown of Gboko, an unexpected encounter changed the course of his life. A representative of his former head of department approached him, conveying the news that he had been selected as a Graduate Assistant at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.

Moved by the serendipitous nature of events, the following day Shikaan packed his bags and journeyed to Zaria, where he met with his former head of department, the late Professor Vajime Charles. Astonishingly, Professor Charles extended a job offer to Shikaan without any formal employment letter or interview process. Reverend Shikaan mused that perhaps his academic achievement (a 2-1 degree) played a role in this unique privilege.

However, Shikaan also recalled a significant twist. During his return to Zaria, he had sensed God’s voice urging him to eventually return to Makurdi. At that time, he didn’t give this calling much credence. He carried on teaching in Zaria, relishing his role and aspiring to become a professor. Yet, in the sixth year of his tenure, he experienced another divine message. This time, God directed him to leave his cherished job and relocate to Makurdi.

The decision was not easy for Shikaan. He cherished his academic path and dreamed of academic advancement, even aspiring to the rank of professor. Yet, he grappled with the choice between following his personal desires and heeding God’s call. Ultimately, his commitment to obedience prevailed. He left Zaria for Makurdi, uprooting his life and family in the process. Since then, he has remained in Makurdi, passionately engaged in ministry and dedicated to serving his community.

Spiritual Journey

Reverend Thomas Shikaan openly shares that he went through multiple attempts to fully surrender his life to Christ, but they didn’t quite stick. However, the turning point came in 1988 when he made a firm decision to recommit himself to Jesus Christ. It was during a gathering that year when he came across the impactful teachings of Brother Gbile Akanni. These teachings struck a chord with him, leaving a profound impression.

Following that encounter, something shifted within Thomas. He experienced a noticeable change in his desires and priorities – many things that once held his attention lost their appeal. Instead, he found himself increasingly drawn to pursuing a devoted relationship with God. This revelation of grace and the call to wholeheartedly follow God’s path became a pivotal moment for him. Ever since, he has remained steadfast in his commitment, consistently walking this path by the grace of God.

Call to Ministry

Upon departing from his university position and prior to his relocation to Makurdi, Thomas Shikaan aligned himself with his spiritual mentor, Bishop David Bakare, dedicating two years to their collaborative efforts. However, an undeniable directive resonated within him, urging him to journey to Makurdi and establish a school. When he finally arrived in Makurdi, the immediate pursuit of his envisioned school was stalled by financial constraints.

In a pivotal turn, his son, Pastor Stephen Imoter, shared a revealing dream from 1998: “Daddy, I saw myself going to school in this house, and you were teaching me.” This prophetic vision struck a chord, prompting serious discussions between Thomas and his wife. Together, they commenced a school within the confines of their home, initially comprising their two sons as sole pupils. Their modest initiative gained momentum as word spread through the neighborhood, prompting other parents to enroll their children.

Yet, the nascent school struggled to financially sustain itself. In response, Thomas Shikaan undertook an unconventional approach: he sold “atapiapia” (local mosquito repellent) to support both his family and the budding school. This resourceful effort persisted for two years until the school’s foundations could be solidified with the unwavering assistance of his steadfast wife. Over time, the school transitioned from its humble beginnings to a temporary location, eventually finding a permanent establishment.

In 2003, another chapter began with the inception of Spirit Life Christian Assembly. Prior to this, Thomas Shikaan had been organizing monthly events known as “Prevailing Word Gathering” within the school premises. These gatherings proved to be a source of blessing, yet attendees expressed the desire for more frequent interactions. Thomas initially resisted the notion of establishing a church, asserting his lack of interest. However, a pivotal moment arrived during one of these programs when his spiritual mentor, Bishop David Bakare, visited from Zaria. Following the event, Bishop Bakare asserted that the time was ripe to initiate a church.

With this unmistakable confirmation, and the divine understanding that his mission extended to both establishing a school and a church, Reverend Thomas Shikaan launched Spirit Life Christian Assembly in 2003.

Ministry and Leadership

Reverend Thomas Orsaar Shikaan is a seasoned minister and leader with a long history of service in various roles. He holds the esteemed position of Founder and Senior Pastor at Spirit Life Christian Assembly. Additionally, he is the visionary behind the Shepherd Commission, a collective encompassing all the churches and schools operated by his dedicated pastors and workers. Notably, he plays an active role in overseeing these educational institutions, including serving as the Director of Shepherd Heritage Academy in Makurdi, as well as other educational entities affiliated with the Shepherd Commission.

In 2019, Reverend Thomas Shikaan received a significant appointment from the then-Governor, Samuel Ortom, in Benue State. He was named Chairman of the Benue State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, an honor that reflects his deep commitment to the Christian community, and one which he held until 2022.

Furthermore, in 2016, Reverend Thomas Shikaan played a pivotal role in co-founding the Conference of Tiv Gospel Ministers (COTGOM). This annual gathering serves as a platform for Tiv Gospel ministers to convene, exchange ideas, fortify their spiritual foundations, engage in collective prayer, and collectively strategize on how to fulfill their divine calling. Their shared goal is to ignite a spiritual revival within the Tiv community while also considering ways to contribute to the region’s development. Reverend Thomas Shikaan has remained the consistent host of COTGOM since its inception.

Community Involvement

Reverend Thomas Shikaan, both through the Shepherd Commission and his personal initiatives, has been deeply engaged in community and social responsibility efforts. These efforts have included the provision of numerous scholarships to students at both the primary and secondary school levels over the years. The Shepherd Commission has taken on the responsibility of caring for and supporting students who have tragically lost their parents, covering their educational expenses and overall well-being.

Furthermore, Reverend Shikaan has extended scholarships to students from the very communities where the schools are located. This outreach has cultivated a strong sense of attachment and protectiveness within the local population towards the schools and their infrastructure. The community members have demonstrated their love for the schools, often going to great lengths, even risking their own safety, to safeguard the school buildings and facilities.

In addition to these educational initiatives, the Shepherd Commission has played a pivotal role in community development by constructing three vital bridges in the vicinity of Shepherd Heritage Academy. These bridges have not only improved transportation but have also enhanced the overall quality of life for the local residents.

Impact on the society

Reverend Thomas Orsaar Shikaan’s impact on society extends far and wide, not only within his local community but also reaching lives across the globe.

In the spiritual realm, many of his former students have taken on the roles of pastors in various churches across Nigeria. Some have even returned to serve within the Shepherd Commission. Others, who may not have pursued pastoral roles, have found themselves thriving spiritually, contributing their talents and dedication in different capacities across diverse locations.

Academically, New Covenant Christian College International graduates have achieved remarkable feats. For example, Terna Kajo, one of its alumni, secured a first-class degree in Computer Science from Covenant University. Numerous students have returned to express their gratitude, testifying that their solid foundation at the hands of Reverend Shikaan enabled them to excel. It’s worth noting that each year at New Covenant, a substantial number of graduating students achieve impressive JAMB examination scores, often exceeding 300 points.

Advocacy for Righteousness

Reverend Shikaan is committed to adhering strictly to biblical doctrines in his teachings. His doctrinal focus encompasses topics such as the Godhead, redemption, sanctification, eternal destiny (either with God or separated from Him), the concept of Sonship, the practice of tithing and charitable giving, the doctrine of eternal judgment, the second coming of Jesus Christ, the anticipation of the great tribulation, the principle of restitution, the belief in the rapture, and a comprehensive exploration of various other sacred doctrines delineated in the Holy Scriptures.

Obstacles, Challenges and Setbacks

Reverend Thomas Shikaan encountered several challenges when he initially moved to Makurdi to establish a school and church. One of his initial hurdles was financial in nature. He held the belief that friends would provide financial support, and consequently, he approached various acquaintances seeking assistance. Unfortunately, these financial lifelines never materialized as expected.

Another significant challenge arose after he had established the school. One day, officials from the Ministry of Education conducted an inspection and subsequently demanded the closure of the school.

Additionally, at the permanent school site, Reverend Thomas faced an unexpected issue. During the land acquisition process from the local community, he was not made aware of an existing road passing through the school compound. However, a day arrived when community members asserted the presence of this road, insisting that it traversed the school property. To reinforce their claim, they even enlisted the help of professionals from the Land and Survey department to create a road through the school premises.

How Challenges Were Overcome

Reverend Shikaan, faced with a series of setbacks in seeking assistance from friends, turned to prayer as his ultimate recourse. In the quiet of his prayer space, he sought divine guidance. In response to his earnest plea, he felt led to a providential encounter with Barrister Chile Igbawua, who unexpectedly handed him Ten Thousand Naira (₦ 10,000). Barrister Igbawua explained that he had felt a strong prompting to provide the money but had kept forgetting to do so. Reverend Shikaan recognized this as a divine provision, affirming that God had indeed made a way. With this initial sum, he was able to procure the first set of desks and benches for the school.

Similarly, when confronted with the challenge posed by the Ministry of Education, Reverend Shikaan turned to prayer once more. He entrusted the situation to God’s control, and divine intervention swiftly followed. As he rang the bell, gathering the children in anticipation of dismissal, the Area Education Officer ordered his team to vacate the school premises. Despite protests from his team, they ultimately obeyed their superior’s command, requesting that Reverend Shikaan visit the Area Education Officer’s office. During their meeting, the Education Officer inquired about the availability of a permanent school site, to which Shikaan confirmed its existence. Upon inspection of the permanent site, the Area Education Officer decided not to pursue the closure of the school any further.

Reverend Shikaan’s unwavering faith and reliance on prayer once again proved instrumental when he encountered his third challenge. Despite the community’s engagement with the Lands and Survey department for a comprehensive redesign, they overlooked the need for a road through the school property. Instead, they constructed a road through the secretary of the committee’s compound. In response, Reverend Shikaan turned to God, and once more, divine intervention prevailed in his favour.
